Gas condensing:proven — with a clear view ahead.

Compact, reliable, cheap to buy. We tell you honestly when gas still pays off in 2026 — and when it doesn't.

How condensing technology works — and why it is so efficient

A gas condensing boiler burns natural gas and — unlike old non-condensing boilers — also uses the condensation heat of the water vapour in the flue gas. The flue gas is cooled down far enough for the water vapour to condense and transfer its heat to the heating water. The result: efficiencies close to the theoretical limit, ten to 15 percent savings compared to an old boiler — with the same gas connection.

Modern units like the Vaillant ecoTEC series modulate continuously down to below 2 kW: instead of constantly switching on and off, the boiler adapts to the actual heat demand — quieter, more economical, longer-lasting. As a Vaillant Premium Partner we have installed the series for years, keep common spare parts in stock and service your system annually.

The legal situation since July 2026: installing a new gas heating system is fully permitted again under the Building Modernization Act. But: from 2029 new gas heating must use a share of bio fuels (10%, rising to 60% by 2040), and the CO₂ price moves into European emissions trading in 2027 — heating with gas is set to become predictably more expensive. That's exactly why we advise you honestly before you buy, instead of just selling.

An honest assessment

Pros and cons — no sugar-coating.

Points in favour of gas condensing

  • Low purchase cost: from €7,000 incl. installation and flue system
  • Quick swap: old out, new in within 1–3 working days
  • Compact: fits in a niche, kitchen or attic — no utility room needed
  • Mature technology with long spare parts availability
  • Hybrid-ready: can be combined with a heat pump later

Points against

  • No state subsidies — zero grant
  • CO₂ price rising: market-based in the EU emissions trading from 2027
  • Bio quota: mandatory bio share from 2029 (10% → 60% by 2040), extra costs open
  • Dependent on gas price and grid fees — which rise as connection numbers fall
  • From 2045, fuels must be completely climate-neutral
Our recommendation

When gas condensing is still the right choice in 2026.

Despite everything, there are cases where we recommend a gas boiler with a clear conscience:

  • Breakdown in winter, tight budget: a quick like-for-like swap keeps the house warm without tying up €20,000 or more.
  • District heating on the horizon: if municipal heat planning will reach your street, the boiler bridges the waiting time.
  • Unrenovated building: with very high flow temperatures, insulate first or run a hybrid — then the heat pump.
  • As a hybrid partner: the condensing boiler covers only peak load, the heat pump the everyday.

In all other cases we calculate the comparison with a heat pump openly — with your figures, not brochure values.

What customers ask us about gas heating.

Realistically, gas condensing replacements start at around €7,000; a heat pump incl. hydraulics and buffer tank starts at around €20,000 before subsidies — state grants can noticeably reduce the costs (current conditions: subsidy check on our financing page). After a short on-site survey you receive a transparent quote from us — billed by actual effort.
